Heroes of the faith in my life

Recently, we visited our church family in Wisconsin and while we were there, I started to think about Hebrews 11. Often called The Heroes of the Faith chapter of the Bible, Hebrews 11 names examples of people from long ago who had strong faith in God, though they often experienced difficulties, unknowns, and situations that seemed impossible. So many of the believers we shared fellowship with in Wisconsin are modern day heroes of the faith in my life.

One man that we spent time with told us about how he found out that some leaders in the company that he worked for, were taking money from the company and he was asked to cover it up. He was asked to lie and hide the truth. Instead of compromising his faith, this husband and father, though not knowing what would happen, left his secure job. This man of integrity, with strong faith in God, was blessed with 2 other job offers and 4 interviews within 3 weeks of him leaving that company!

Another man we know committed to his wife for better and for worse, in sickness and in health. They have grown old together and now she is dying and unable to take care of herself. He is committed to her, to the end. He lovingly continues to care for his bride and he sits by her bedside all day long. Her children and grandchildren too, show Christ’s love to her, by caring for her as well. It’s not easy but they know that God is sovereign even in this very difficult time in their family.

One woman we visited with continues to cling to the Lord, though her husband was unfaithful and her mother recently passed away.

Another woman is grieving the loss of her husband after many years together and she keeps pressing on.

One couple continues to stand strong in their faith through health struggles, children who have strayed from their faith and broken relationships.

We were blessed by our journey to Wisconsin. We loved the time with each and every person we visited with – some who we hadn’t seen in years.  These brothers and sisters in Christ, who are growing in their relationship with Jesus, encouraged our hearts and our faith.

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance, the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1-3
