First Place In Everything

“He is also head of the body, the church, & He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything.” Colossians 1:18

This post is especially for parents with preteens, however if your kids are younger, you might want to remember it for the future, which will come all too soon!

Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.”  God has given us our children to disciple; we need to lead them, teach them and be a Christ-like example to them. Walter A. Henrichsen, with the Navigators, wrote in an article, How to Disciple Your Children, “For a few short years, God has entrusted our children to our care. Whether for good or bad, we will mark them for eternity.” If we invest in our children, we can make a permanent difference in their lives, for the Lord’s glory.

In Titus 2:3-5, older women are instructed to, “…teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.” (emphasis added) I want to follow God’s Word and be a Titus 2 woman and I also want to teach my daughter how to be a Titus 2 woman. This will happen as I follow the Lord in obedience and as I teach her these things with my words and by my example.

FamilyLife created Passport2Purity to help parents build communication with their preteen and help lay a foundation of purity in their preteen’s life.  FamilyLife says, “Through guided conversations, object lessons and audio-based teaching, you can set your child on a journey of moral integrity—and strengthen the bond between you.”

Hannah & I did Passport2Purity last month, on her 12th birthday.

FamilyLife encourages parents to take their preteen away for an overnight to do the Passport2Purity, so I reserved a night’s stay in St. Charles, IL for our get-away. They also encouraged parents to do something special and fun with their preteen like a baseball game, an art museum or ice-skating. I decided to take Hannah to a summer theater fest at the Pheasant Run Resort where we heard the songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein because Hannah loves songs from musicals and it’s something that we’ve never done! FamilyLife wants it to be a really special, memorable time together for moms & daughters or fathers & sons.

During the 5 sessions that we did during our time away, Dennis Rainey, President of FamilyLife, and his wife Barbara, teach about God’s Word, peer-pressure, sex, purity, and dating. They teach about these topics with the Bible as the foundation and they have good follow-up questions that encourage more conversations. There are also fun object lessons that reiterate the session’s lessons.  The Passport2Purity kit includes a Tour Guide for parents, Travel Journal for the preteen and CDs of 5 audio teaching sessions. and can be ordered on FamilyLife‘s website: http://www.familylife.com/

I would highly recommend Passport2Purity to any parent with a preteen.  It was such a blessing to have this special time together, talk about some important issues and encourage Hannah to give Jesus first place in everything!
