Looking Back at the Day of Prayer & Fasting; Lifted Up

On Monday, October 1st, we fasted and prayed, along with at least 18 other individuals and families. We each gave up something for that day- food, electronics, the internet or something else, so that we could have more time with the Lord. We were depending on Him and specifically praying for more ministry partners for Africa.  Through the time of fasting and praying, the Lord encouraged our hearts to continue to persevere.

Just days before, we were feeling discouraged, frustrated and tired.  Mark is serving full-time at our church and I’m homeschooling our kids. And together, we are developing ministry partners as we prepare to go overseas – this involves scheduling appointments and meeting with people, communicating a lot via email, face-book, and newsletters as well as participating in various trainings like an on-line course we are currently taking. We are juggling a lot and were feeling a little tired by it all. And because it is taking longer than we hoped to raise the financial support to go, we were growing discouraged and frustrated.

When I think about the special people in our lives who prayed for us and fasted on Monday, I thought about a story written in the Old Testament, when Moses got tired.  The Israelites were fighting the Amalekites;  When Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. Exodus 17:12 says, “When Moses’ hands grew tired… Aaron and Hur held his hands up-one on one side, one on the other- so that his hands remained steady till sunset.” When he was tired, Aaron and Hur helped him.

There are times in our lives, when we all get tired.  That’s when the Lord sometimes uses others to help us persevere.  I was so blessed to receive emails, texts, and phone-calls from people telling us that they were fasting and praying! One friend told me about how she fasted from electronics for the day. And each time she thought about going on-line, she and her family prayed for us! Wow! We are so thankful for people like her in our lives! We are thankful for everyone who fasted and prayed for us. Each one was our Aaron and Hur – lifting us up!

“…let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.” Hebrews 12:1b-3

  1. I love the connection you made with Exodus, the story about Moses! It’s so true that each of us do at some time, or many times, in our lives need others to lift us or hold us up. It’s a great reminder that we are not to do life by our own strength or efforts or even by ourself.
Mark & Cathy, I’m so thankful that all of us have the opportunity to support, encourage, & lift you up because your willingness and obedience to “GO into all the world & preach the gospel” is such an encouragement to us!

    • Thank you, Kristi, for your comment. We’re so thankful for you & your family; for your friendship and for lifting us up in prayer. We are praying for you guys too!
