What did you do with your twenty dollars?

I just recently decided how to give away the $20.  It took a lot longer than I thought it would. What really threw me in this whole thing was the concept of getting the “best return” on the investment for the Lord.

And there was something that my pastor said that has stuck with me during this “experiment” that he presented us with a couple months ago, and it will stick with me probably for the rest of my life.  Pastor Brian said that each of us receives an opportunity to give and bless as we receive our paychecks.  Though Cathy and I have regularly given to the church and to missions over the years, I never had the mentality that the money I receive was an opportunity to give.  It’s a new way to think, and I am trying to embrace it.  So I felt led to commit to give an additional $20 monthly instead of just giving the $20 from church.  So, who does the Lord want me to commit giving it to?

I encountered poverty and need from the streets of New York City to downtown Toronto but held back as I considered what would be best to give the money to.  I also thought about ministries and groups that are doing incredible work around the world that could be a wise investment.  But there was one thing that was always missing: relationship.

Then it hit me.  There is a missionary couple in the Chicago area that has ministered to me, and that has encouraged me so much over the last year.  They have dedicated their lives to minister and train men and women to effectively disciple youth all over the Midwest.  This couple, Dave and Rennie have been an inspiration and blessing to me, and if there is anyone I believe God wants me to invest in, it’s them.

It’s a little awkward to write about this when Cathy and I are developing ministry partners who want to give to the Africa ministry that the Lord is calling us to.  But I hope that everyone who reads this is not challenged to necessarily give to us.  But instead, that when God burdens each of you to give, that you would follow and obey Him.  I pray that you seek the Lord as to how you can be part of the work He is doing here and abroad, and invest in His work.  The return will be amazing.

“So he called ten of his servants and gave them ten minas. ‘Put this money to work,’ he said, ‘until I come back.’… Then he sent for the servants to whom he had given the money, in order to find out what they had gained with it. The first one came and said, ‘Sir, your mina has earned ten more.’ ‘Well done, my good servant!’ his master replied. ‘Because you have been trustworthy in a very small matter, take charge of ten cities.'”  Luke 19:13,15b-17
