our love story

I was preparing to start my second year at Moody Bible Institute when I first met Mark. I went back to school a week early to help with the orientation for new students, and Mark was there. He was on my brother floor… Culby 16.   (Each of the floors in the girl’s dorm at Moody get matched up with a floor in the boy’s dorm. It’s a way for students to get to know each other. Brother/sister floors do special activities together, sit together at chapel, and can eat meals together. If a girl needs to walk somewhere in Chicago, she could call on a brother for help).

Mark remembers our very first conversation while on our first bro/sis event. We started talking while crossing Michigan Avenue. It was August of 1995. 20 years ago!

Mark was friendly and fun to be around. He was kind and encouraging. Our friendship grew as we got to know each other.  The following Spring, I started to help out with Mark’s youth group. I really saw his love for Jesus and for the kids he ministered to. He became one of my best friends.  We had many of the same values and beliefs, and we shared a lot of similar dreams. I could talk with him about practically anything. I was so thankful for our friendship, and I started to like him more than just friends.

The next Autumn, October 15th, we started courting. I was pretty sure that he was the one. I didn’t want to live without my best friend in my life.

We got engaged a year later. Mark took me to dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, at the bottom of the John Hancock building, and then we went on a romantic carriage ride through the city. Then, Mark took me to his sister’s house, about 15 minutes from Moody. We sat in her living room, with a dozen red roses on her coffee table that he bought for me, and he showed me the photo album that I had given him a few months before. It was a collection of memories; notes that we had given each other and pictures from the past two years. Then, Mark talked about our future together, and he gave me another photo album. He spoke of how we could fill the new album with more memories. Then, with a diamond ring in his hand, he got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him.

We were married on August 23rd, 1998.  17 years later, Mark is still, and always will be, the one and only for me. I am so blessed to live this life together with him. I thank Jesus for Mark.

Happy Anniversary to the love of my life and my best friend, Cathy Lynn

  1. Hmmm. I seemed to recall that somewhere in that love story of yours – you, joy and the rest of your cohorts ambushed a poor innocent Assyrian theologian in training with water balloons, leaving him a dazed state of shock. Poor fellow, he earned his rewards in heaven that day.

    • Why did I just approve this message 😉 PETER!!! Never forget that you’re our favorite Assyrian! I could write a book about all of our awesome Moody days!

  2. The Cheesecake factory is now on the 95 fifth floor. Wow, beautiful story of love. When I studied at Moody I lived on Culby 9th floor. I remember the brother sister events too. The best of wishes to you and may Jesus continue to hold your hearts together.

    • Wow, Pastor Eric! That’s awesome! I didn’t realize that you lived on campus!.. So this was before your love story with Gladness, huh? We look forward to seeing you, Lord-willing, very soon here in Cameroon.

  3. Thank you for sharing how God drew the two of you together. It’s a beautiful story, and the story continues!

  4. What sweet memories; thanks for sharing them! Happy anniversary to you both! We’re so glad the Lord brought you together. 🙂

  5. Congratulations to you! What a great couple you are!

  6. Thank you for your kind, encouraging words! I am blessed that Jesus gave me Mark. We enjoyed lunch in Yaounde together after church to celebrate, but remembered our romantic, peaceful get-away to Door County this past summer. It’s so good to get-away together at least once a year!

  7. How sweet. Happy anniversary to both of you.

    Blessings,

    Sheryl
